The 10th level sorcerer can match the wizard and still have a couple points for metamagic The sorcerer casts more spells than the wizard per day whether there is a short rest or not just spending points on creating slots. The 10 sorcery points for an equal level sorcerer creates a 1 fifth level slot and 1 second level slot instead of only a 1 fifth level slot to which the wizard is limited, and doesn't require a short rest to access it. Usually it's 1 single spell of the highest level slot or 2 spell slots. He's only using his lowest level spells in order to use his lowest level spells again. The most he could recover is 4 provided he had cast 3 first and 1 second level spell prior to the short rest.
